What is An Identity Theft Report?
An identity theft report is an advanced copy of a police report, which means that it has more than the usual amount of details. This report includes enough details about the crime that the credit reporting companies and businesses involved can verify that you are a victim of identity theft. It will also help the companies and businesses know which accounts are involved and have inaccurate information from identity theft. A normal police report does not have many details about the accounts opened or misused by identity thieves.
An identity theft report will help with the following:
- The credit reporting company will permanently block fraudulent information from appearing on your credit report.
- When the companies know where the used your information this should ensure that these debts do not reappear on your credit report.
- It can prevent a company from continuing to try to collect debts that result from identity theft.
- It can prevent a company from selling those debts to others for collection.
- It will allow you to place an extended fraud alert on your credit report.
Make sure that your identity theft reports contain enough information to prove you are a victim of identity theft so that the credit reporting companies do not decline identity theft report.
To create and use an identity theft report requires two steps:
- STEP 1: File a report with a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency. These agencies can include your local police department, the FBI, your State Attorney General, the U.S. Secret Service, etc. Make sure that you put as much information as can about the crime, including anything you know about the dates and fraudulent accounts opened.
- STEP 2: This begins when you send the credit reporting companies and the businesses involved a copy of your identity theft reports. You should do this by certified mail, return receipt requested. If they need more information, the company has to make their request within 15 days of receiving your identity theft report. If they accept your report, the business or credit reporting company has 15 more days to work with you to make sure that your report contains everything they need.
If you are a victim of identity theft, make sure that you not only file a report with the local law enforcement but also file an identity theft report with the businesses and credit card companies.
