St. Louis Mayor’s Website Hacked

Posted November 21, 2011

A hacker who claims to be part of the Anonymous network hacked into the website of the mayor of St. Louis.  They left a message of support for the anti-Wall Street protesters.  They are being threatened to be evicted from their campsite.

The message the hacker left stated, “YOU CAN REMOVE THE MOVEMENT FROM THE CITY. BUT YOU CANNOT REMOVE THE MOVEMENT FROM YOUR SYSTEMS!”  In addition, the hacker posted contacts of hundreds of political supports of Mayor Francis Slay and over two thousand emails that were sent by the mayor.  Mayor Slay has been the mayor of St. Louis since 2001.

On Tuesday evening the contact information was posted by the hacker on pastebin.com.  This posting happened after the mayoral staff had met with the demonstrators for two hours.  Since October 1st, there have been between twenty-five and one hundred demonstrators who have been camping in a park that is near the Gateway Arch downtown.  This is part of the Occupy Wall Street campaign that is happening now in New York City.  They are protesting against a financial system that benefits mostly the wealthy and corporations.

This hacker attack happened shortly before the OccupySTL website took a hit.  The “Forum” section that website was wiped clean on Wednesday by a hacker.  In the general hearings there was no general discussion about using hacking as a strategy.

The hacker group Anonymous is taking the credit for hacking into the computer network of the Oakland, California’s transit system.  This is where some of the latest Occupy movement demonstrations have taken place.
