The Truth Behind Lulz Security

Posted June 30, 2011

Lulz Security is the hackers that are claiming they are behind the data breaches of many government, game station, and general websites.  Some of the websites they are laying claim to are Sony websites, CIA and US Senate websites, porn websites, British police website, and more over the past several months.

Lulz Security says they are finding these attacks entertaining and that they find it extremely funny to watch all the havoc that happens because of them.  Their name Lulz is a derivative of the text shorthand for laugh out loud (LOL).  They are also saying that this is the internet is the place where they screw around with each other just for the jolt of satisfaction but apparently they do not seem to care about all the trouble they are causing, or what is going to happen when they get caught.

They said that they like to release the personal data that they manage to breach so that the evil people out there can entertain them with what they can do with that personal data which is stealing someone’s identity and making their lives miserable.  When a person has their identity stolen they can not only loose a lot of money both by having their identity stolen but also the cost of getting their identity repaired.  Their credit can also be ruined; they could be arrested for a crime they did not commit because someone is using their name and so much more.

It may be funny to Lulz Security to see what happens when personal data is put online but it is not funny to those that it happens to.  They claim that they have released thousands of user names and passwords in recent weeks but they have an ace up their sleeve because they claim they are holding onto the personal information of two hundred thousand users of the Brink videogame.  Whether this is true or not has not been publicly announced by the company.

In an ironic turn of events, when the Sega Corp was attacked this past Friday Lulz Security offered to track down the hackers and punish them for the attack.  At one time they said they were not going to have anything to do with the hacker group Anonymous but now they are saying they are going to team up with this activist group.

Lulz Security is now threatening to steal classified information from banks, governments, and high ranking establishments and according to a message that they posted on Twitter, hacking is now taking place in the government behind the scenes.  This group has over two hundred thousand followers on their Twitter blog.

This group is believed to be scattered around the globe and meeting in secret chat rooms but a security technologist does not believe that any of the members of this group are hardened criminals.    All anybody can do is be on the lookout and change your password often whenever you leave your information on any gaming site.
